Recent Highlights

$125 million - New York
Michael Bloomberg, the current mayor of New York city made his pledge to the World Health Organization to reduce the number of deaths and injuries from car accidents. Funds to be directed to six organizations over five years in 10 countries that account for 48% of deaths.

This follows Bloomberg’s gift of $9 million for the pilot project back in 2007

The Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve established with a gift from Stephen Bechtel Jr., chairman of the S.D. Bechtel Jr. Foundation, the largest in scouting history

Davis, CA – The grand opening of Maurice J. Gallagher, Jr. Hall, the new home of the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Davis celebrating the gift .

The gift came from Maurice Gallagher, Jr.  and his wife Marcia. He is a Las Vegas airline executive. Gallagher earned his undergraduate degree in history from UC Davis in 1971.

New York, NY - Anonymous gift to The Miami Project, organized by NFL Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti and his son Marc hosted a full house of 1,300 guests at the 24th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner, held at the Waldorf Astoria, to benefit The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis

Weekly Major Gift editorial, October 12, 2009

Major gift trends continue to move forward. Last week that trend continued as more than $58 million in public major gift announcements celebrated philanthropy. There were six dedication ceremonies of private gifts last week, including the AT&T Performing Arts Center in Dallas. According to one source the Dallas fundraising effort was the first time there have been more than 100 $1 million donors to an arts campaign.

Santa Monica, CA - Patrick Soon-Shiong, a pharmaceuticals executive, and his wife Michele B. Chan, an actress, have pledged $65 million to Saint John’s Health Center. This is the second mega gift, the previous one $35 million in 2007 to renovate the hospital and establish a center for translational sciences.

Philadelphia, PA - Jaharis Family Foundation pledge of $10 million to Haverford College dorm

Urbana, IL - Wayne Koonce Endowment for Liberal Arts and Sciences announced during campaign results, $10 million gift. University of Indiana raises record $221.4 million in fiscal year 2009.

Grand Forks, ND - The University of North Dakota College of Business and Public Administration received a $10 million gift from an anonymous donor.

New York, NY - David M. Rubenstein’s gift of $10 million to the Lincoln Center. Managing director of the Carlyle Group, the heavyweight private equity concern that he helped found in 1987, he currently serves on the boards of about 30 major institutions and says he donates generously to all of them.

West Lafayette, IN – Purdue University named the Lyles-Porter Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences facility for a gift of $10 million from Marybeth Lyles Higuera, a former speech pathologist and Purdue university alumna.

New York, NY – An estate gift of $10 million from Michael H. Dunn to the Museum of Modern Art from the retired stockbroker who lived in Derby, VT.

Washington, D.C. - The Georgetown Medical Center recently received a $6.75 million gift to do research on colon, pancreatic and other gastrointestinal cancers from Jeanne Ruesch, whose husband, local businessman and philanthropist Otto Ruesch, died of pancreatic cancer in 2004.

West Lafayette, IN - Purdue names Wayne & Mary Hockmeyer Hall of Structural Biology, $5.3 million gift for the study of structural biology, vaccines and new treatments.

San Mateo, CA - TERI Inc. received a $5 million gift from Charles Cono and named the center for him. It will mean a more secure future for people with autism and other developmental disabilities.

Urbana, IL - Juanita J. and Robert E. Simpson University Library Deanship named gift announced during University of Illinois campaign, $5 million.

Chapel Hill, NC – A gift from the estate of alum Reese Felts of $3.5 million to the University of North Carolina for a Student Newsroom.

Cedar Falls, IA – The Richard O. Jacobson Human Performance Complex was dedicated last week at the University of Northern Iowa for a gift in excess of $3 million. Named for the Des Moines businessman, the complex is 9,136 square feet in size and includes training facilities, offices and change rooms for the athletes.

Belmont, NC - W. Duke Kimbrell Family Foundation gift to Gaston Memorial Hospital to establish an endowed scholarship in the name of Wayne Shovelin in the amount of $2.5 million.

Tulsa, OK - George Kaiser Family Foundation endowed chair University of Tulsa, $2.5 million grant

Palo Alto, CA - Google Inc. gift to Stanford University of $2.5 million to create an endowed chair in honor of Rajeev Motwani, computer science professor who mentored Google's founders and died this past summer.

Genessee County, NY - Charles L. “Bud” VanArsdale of Castile, former president of the Bank of Castile, gift to Geneseo State College of $2.5 million to establish the college's first endowed professorship.

Cedar Falls, IA - Russell and Connie Wasendorf have pledged $2 million to the University of Northern Iowa Panther athletics.

Cedar Falls, IA – A gift of $1.5 million established the Pauline R. Barrett Endowed Scholarship Fund at the University of Northern Iowa. Barrett of Waterloo, Iowa, already has donated to the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center, the McLeod Center and Russell Hall, where the Barrett Wing is named in her honor.

Urbana, IL – Gift of $1.3 million from June Michael of St. Louis to fund need-based scholarships in the University of Illinois College of Law and create a law professorship named for her cousin, John D. Columbo.

Brooklyn, NY - The Arnold Goldman Center for Assistive Technology named for $1 million gift to Helen Hayes Hospital

Springfield, MO - The Breast Cancer Foundation of the Ozarks announced an estate gift of $1 million from Nadia and Howard Cavner.

West Volusia, NH – Salvation Army announced an anonymous gift of $1 million to bring service to the community and build a 12,000 square foot center.

Alexandria, MN – Bud Peterson of Alexandria made the final payment of $600,000 on his $1.5 million pledge to the local YMCA.

Urbana, IL - Kimiyo and Chinoree T. Enta Japan House Endowment named for a private gift of seven figures to support fellowships in chemistry and biology, and provide funds for the University of Illinois College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Urbana, IL – The Chez Family Scholars Program, to support academically gifted but economically disadvantaged Chicago Public Schools graduates, named for a private bequest of seven figures to the University of Illinois.

Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada – The Seymour Schulich Law School named at Dalhousie University for his gift of $20 million.

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada - HSBC Bank Canada gift of $2.17 million to University of British Columbia.

Edmonton, Alberta, Canada – Frank & Beverley MacInnis, gift of $2.5 million to University of Alberta Law School, named classroom in their honour. MacInnes is grew up in Canmore, Alberta and currently resides in Connecticut, where he is the chief executive at Emcor Group, the world's largest specialty construction and facilities services company.

Weekly Named Gift Report editorial October 5th, 2009 by Terry Burton The health care sector had the largest public gift announcement last week as Patrick Soon-Shiang and his wife Michele Chan made their second mega gift to the Saint John’s Health Center in Santa Monica, California. Last week the gift was $65 million on top of their 2007 pledge of $35 million to the same organization. How cool is that. A $100 million commitment by Patrick and Michele.

Dallas-based Sammons Enterprises is a privately held $40 billion company operating businesses across industries including insurance, finance, equipment distribution, hospitality and real estate. The company also manages an investment portfolio. Charles Sammons died in 1988.
