Major Gift Report editorial September 8, 2009

Weekly Major Gift Report
August 31st  to September 4th  2009

by Terry Burton

Back to school and back in business for the major gift crowd. Wow. What a start to September.

The Hesburgh-Yusko Scholars Program was announced at Notre Dame University, a $35 million gift from Mark W. Yuskos and Stacey Miller Yuskos of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Within a day, the University of Miami announced the naming of the John P. Hussman Institute of Geonomics in appreciation of his $20 million gift.

It has been over a month, around August 3rd, since we heard about a single philanthropic gift over $25 million. That was the Home Depot gift of $30 million to Habitat for Humanity. In two days last week there were two of mega gifts.

Last week may be the tipping point we have been waiting for. The total dollar amount of new major gifts with public announcements tallied in excess of $100 million. It is the depth and scope of the secondary major gifts that suggests a robust trend is beginning to unfold. Nine other major gifts greater than $2 million are included in last week’s numbers, an indicator that donors have been waiting for the summer holidays to wrap up. Let’s see if the trend continues in what may be a very busy fall fundraising season.

Stewardship is the key.
